Why Rotate Pet Proteins?

Why Rotate Pet Proteins?

So why all the fuss about rotating your pets protein?  If you are a vegetarian do you eat only broccoli?  If you are vegan do you eat only chickpeas?  Carnivores were not meant to eat only one protein source.

First, let's look at protein.  Protein is made up of amino acids.  There are essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids.  The non-essential amino acids can be made in the body from various essential amino acids.  All proteins are assigned a biologic value, and that determines the quality of protein.  An egg has a biologic value of 100 - it is the perfect protein.  All meat proteins we feed our pets:  beef, bison, lamb, turkey, chicken, etc have similar biologic values ranging from 67 to 89, however they have completely different essential amino acid compositions.  Rotating those proteins gives your pet a greater variety of both essential and non-essential amino acids.  This is the primary reason Taurine levels in cat foods are so critical.  Cats are not able to convert adequate levels of the non-essential amino acid Taurine from the essential amino acids (Methionine to Cysteine to Taurine) from their proteins.

In my opinion, the real goal of eating and feeding is nutritional balance over time - NOT complete and balanced every meal.  The benefit to your pet with protein rotation is the balancing of various amino acids over time.  The other "hidden" but critical benefit to rotation is the reduction of developing an aellrgy to a certain protein.  Our pets can develop food allergies for many reasons but more and more it is being linked to feeding the same protein for a long period of time.

Along with rotating proteins it is also important to feed a high quality protein meat source.  Not all meat is created equal!  Many companies show a beautiful picture of a steak, or roast with the product but the reality is far from it.  At Big Bear Pet we do not use mechanically separated meat, or any meat by-products.  All our meats are locally sourced, grass fed with no added hormones or antibiotics and are all human edible USDA inspected products!
